Lecture 1. Internet preparation |
| Learning objective:
What is Internet? What can you do on Internet? What is
the equipment for Internet? |
What
is Internet?
Internet is originated from a linking network called ¡®ARPANET¡¯,
invented in 1960s by U.S. to exchange information on the
computers between research institutes in preparation for
nuclear attack form the Soviet Union. This ARPANET network
was diffused by increasing use of civil organizations
and nowadays most countries make active use of Internet
except for extremely exclusive countries like North Korea
or some African nations.
It was not until a few years ago that the people in general
began to contact with Internet. However, as ultra-speed
Internet lines are installed, mainly at PC game rooms,
number of Internet users are growing rapidly, and estimated
number of users are beyond precise calculation.
It is in fact meaningless to buy
Internet guidance book these days. It is not an exaggeration
to say that books can hardly catch up with the world of
Internet that changes day by day. I am assured, though
only personally, that daily contact with Internet in order
to get data and information will make any one accustomed
to free handling of Internet.
We cannot be expected to master all the aspects of Internet
only through this lecture, but I believe that the basic
knowledge about Internet could be transmittable. |

What
can you do on Internet?
1) E-mail
You can send within seconds, regardless of distance, various
forms of letter including text, image, and file transmission.
Emergence of many project products effected by multi-media
is based on the ultra-speed Internet. You are to learn
how to write an e-mail in Lecture 10, How to use E-mail.
2) FTP (File Transfer Protocol)
This sends and receives files with fast speed, but recently
users of this function tend to be decreasing. FTP is employed
when you register a homepage or specific file in Internet
account. Generally Ws_ftp le is widely used.
3) Various kinds of homepage service
You can collect or share on the global basis a vast amount
of information stored in governments, public organizations,
companies, or private homepages.

What
is the equipment for Internet?
The Internet connection is mainly divided in two parts,
that is, LAN connection and domestic phone line connection,
so LAN card and modem should be respectively installed
in the computer of LAN user and phone line user.
For more details on Internet connection, consult the next
lecture.
Web browser includes Internet Explorer, developed by Microsoft,
and Navigator. But as most Internet users are now using
Explorer as their basic browser, so the explanation about
browsers will be centered on Explorer only.
In addition, if you want to see a homepage with flash
in a version of lower than Explorer 4.0, you should install
plug-in.
Modem: Modem is an indispensable equipment of Internet,
changing phone signal into computer signal or vice versa.
In more technical terms, phone line is an analogue mode
and computer is a digital signal. That is why we need
an equipment to shift analogue signal into digital one.
Sound card: This equipment, with which you can enjoy music
on Internet or other various services, is necessarily
set up in a computer today. |
